The Role of the Deputy Chief of Sustainability

The Deputy Chief of Sustainability serves as a key member of the executive leadership team at Rocky Mountain Prep, a 12-school charter management organization with 650+ employees. Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer, this role is responsible for ensuring the organization’s long-term sustainability through strategic leadership of Finance, Information Technology, and Development.

This leader integrates financial stewardship, technological infrastructure, and revenue generation to drive organizational resilience, growth, and operational excellence. The Deputy Chief of Sustainability ensures that Rocky Mountain Prep operates with strong systems, sustainable resources, and a forward-looking strategy in service of its mission and PEAK values (Perseverance, Excellence, Adventure, Kindness).

This role directly manages Finance and IT and oversees Development in close partnership with the CEO (dotted-line reporting), ensuring alignment between financial strategy, fundraising, and organizational priorities.
 

The Deputy Chief of Sustainability at RMP will deliver…

Organizational Sustainability Strategy

  • Provide strategic leadership to ensure the long-term financial and operational sustainability of the organization.
  • Partner with the CEO and executive team to develop and execute multi-year sustainability strategies, including financial planning, revenue diversification, and infrastructure investments.
  • Serve as a strategic advisor on the implications of key decisions, including growth, staffing, systems investments, and program expansion.
  • Integrate financial, technological, and fundraising strategies into a cohesive approach to organizational health and resilience.

Finance

Financial Strategy, FP&A, and Operations

  • Lead all financial functions, including budgeting, financial planning and analysis, accounting, cash management, and compliance.
  • Oversee the development of annual budgets and long-term financial models aligned to strategic priorities.
  • Ensure strong forecasting, scenario planning, and financial reporting to support decision-making.
  • Partner with school and department leaders to build financial acumen and accountability.
  • Develop dashboards and tools to track financial performance and key metrics.

Accounting, Compliance & Controls

  • Ensure accurate financial reporting and strong internal controls.
  • Oversee accounting functions, including general ledger, AP/AR, payroll, and audits.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, federal/state regulations, and charter requirements.
  • Lead annual audits and maintain strong relationships with auditors and financial institutions.

Cash Management & Operational Efficiency

  • Oversee cash flow, liquidity, and investment strategies.
  • Ensure efficient financial systems, procurement practices, and vendor management.

Information Technology (IT)

Technology Strategy & Infrastructure

  • Lead the organization’s IT strategy to ensure systems effectively support staff, students, and operations.
  • Oversee infrastructure, cybersecurity, data systems, and technology integrations across schools and central office.
  • Ensure technology investments align with instructional, operational, and strategic priorities.

Systems & Data Enablement

  • Partner with internal stakeholders (including Data and Academics teams) to ensure technology supports data-driven decision-making.
  • Drive continuous improvement of systems, platforms, and user experience.
  • Ensure strong data governance, security, and compliance practices.

Development (with dotted line to CEO)

Fundraising Strategy & Execution

  • Oversee the Development function in close partnership with the CEO, ensuring alignment between fundraising strategy and organizational sustainability goals.
  • Support the development and execution of a comprehensive fundraising strategy, including individual giving, grants, and institutional funding.
  • Ensure revenue diversification to strengthen long-term financial sustainability.

Board & External Engagement

  • Partner with the CEO and Board to cultivate and steward donor relationships.
  • Support the creation of compelling cases for support, grant proposals, and impact reporting.
  • Monitor and report on fundraising progress, revenue projections, and risks.

Governance & Board Engagement

  • Partner with the Board of Directors and relevant committees (Finance, Development) to ensure strong oversight and transparency.
  • Prepare and present clear, strategic reports on financial health, technology investments, and fundraising progress.
  • Support Board decision-making through data-driven insights and scenario analysis.


Qualifications

Required:

  • Demonstrated expertise in financial strategy, budgeting, and organizational planning.
  • Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams and build strong, scalable systems in complex organizations.
  • Strong analytical, strategic thinking, and communication skills.
  • Deep commitment to equity, inclusion, and mission-driven work.

Preferred:

  • Experience overseeing or partnering closely with IT and/or technology strategy functions.
  • Experience overseeing or partnering closely with philanthropy/development functions.

Education: 

Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business, or related field required; MBA, CPA, or related advanced credential preferred.

Years of experience: 10+ years of progressive leadership experience, ideally spanning finance, operations, or strategy in education, nonprofit, or public sector settings.
