Position Summary
The Director of Schools is an instructional leader responsible for leading and supporting a portfolio of Rocky Mountain Prep schools to achieve strong academic outcomes, joyful student culture, and effective school leadership.
This role serves as a principal coach and portfolio leader, directly responsible for the performance of assigned schools. The Director of Schools works under the guidance of the Executive Director of Schools to ensure alignment with network priorities while driving strong execution at the school level.
The Director will oversee a portfolio of schools that may include both strong-performing campuses and schools requiring targeted improvement. This role balances maintaining strong performance with providing hands-on leadership and coaching to improve outcomes where needed.
Key Responsibilities
Portfolio Leadership & Principal Coaching
- Directly manage and coach principals across a portfolio of schools to drive academic results, a strong culture, and effective operations.
- Set clear expectations for school performance aligned to network priorities and ensure principals are accountable for results.
- Provide consistent, high-quality coaching, feedback, and support to school leaders.
- Build strong relationships with school leadership teams while maintaining a high bar for performance.
School Performance & Improvement
- Own the performance of assigned schools across academic, cultural, and operational metrics.
- Analyze school data to identify trends, strengths, and areas for improvement.
- Lead targeted support and intervention for schools requiring improvement, including diagnosing challenges and supporting the execution of solutions.
- Ensure schools have strong systems for tracking progress and driving continuous improvement.
Instructional & Culture Leadership
- Support principals in implementing high-quality instructional systems aligned to network expectations.
- Conduct regular school visits, classroom observations, and leadership walkthroughs to assess instructional and cultural execution.
- Ensure strong student culture systems are in place and consistently implemented.
- Reinforce high expectations for teaching, learning, and student experience across schools.
Execution of Network Priorities
- Lead the implementation of network-wide initiatives across assigned schools.
- Ensure principals understand, prioritize, and execute organizational priorities with fidelity.
- Serve as a key connector between schools and the Network Support Team to ensure alignment and follow-through.
- Monitor execution and adjust support to ensure successful implementation.
Data & Accountability
- Build and maintain robust systems to track school performance and leadership effectiveness.
- Use data to drive coaching, decision-making, and accountability across the portfolio.
- Ensure principals are using data effectively to inform instruction, culture, and operations.
- Escalate risks and challenges to the Executive Director of Schools and partner on solutions.
Leadership Development
- Support the development of assistant principals and emerging leaders within schools.
- Reinforce leadership expectations and contribute to building strong school-based leadership teams.
- Partner with the Talent Team to support leadership pipelines and succession planning.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Partner with teams across academics, student services, operations, and talent to support school success.
- Ensure schools receive coordinated and aligned support from network teams.
- Communicate school needs, progress, and challenges to the Executive Director of Schools.
Qualifications
- Proven record of strong academic and cultural outcomes as a principal, assistant principal, or school leader.
- Experience coaching or developing other leaders.
- Strong instructional leadership and understanding of effective teaching practices.
- Demonstrated ability to analyze data and drive improvement.
- Strong relationship-building and communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and drive execution in a fast-paced environment.
- Commitment to educational equity and belief in the potential of every child.
